Makan Place – Al Azhar

Al-Azhar is the quintessential Singapore style eating house. An Indian Muslim establishment, selling everything from pratas, naans and mutarbaks to nasi goreng, kuay teow goreng and ayam goreng. But that’s not all, this place deals sometimes in the Singaporean conception of “Western food” and Thai-Chinese food too. And, its open 24/7. This, sir, is Singapore through and through.

And you know it’s Singaporean by the mix of people who choose to eat there.

Al Azhar 1Situated with the stretch of shophouses at Cheong Chin Nam Road, Al Azhar Eating Restaurant (that’s it’s full name) does a good job on almost everything it sells. Everyhing gets prepared in its large kitchens, separated it seems by cuisine.

Al Azhar 2According to a local expert, Al Azhar was not the original big name around this place, that belonged to Ameen Eating House just a minute away. However because of the food and the convenience (open 24/7 with good food) the crowd started moved over the patronise Al-Azhar instead. Well, at least that’s the story I was told.

Anyway, back to the food.

Al Azhar 3 Al Azhar 4 Al Azhar 5The food here is mostly heavy. It’s tasty, but be warned that its very filling.

burp…

A great place for a late night snack or supper! (I know I’m probably not doing this place any justice, so check out more detailed posts on this restaurant here, here and here.)
