Frank Sinatra sang about Singapore?

You probably know about Frank Sinatra, if you don’t… what’s wrong with you! Kidding, Frank Sinatra was a huge celebrity in the early 20th century. He was a generation before Elvis Presley and was the King of Pop and Jazz in the era.

I liked his songs like ‘Chicago’, ‘New York, New York’, ‘Fly me to the Moon’, but I never realised that he had sang a song about Singapore until I picked up a book by the Singapore Tourism Board called, ‘On a Street in Singapore’.

The authors mentioned that the title was inspired by a song that Sinatra sang (It was written by Peter DeRose and Billy Hill).

So I youtubed

I like this versin from Mahattan Transfer better though, more fun.

Here are the lyrics

On a little street in Singapore
With me – beside a lotus covered door
A veil of moonlight on her lovely face
How pale the hands that held me in embrace

My sails tonight are filled with perfume of Shalimar
With temple bells that guide me to her shore
And then I hold you in my arms
And love the way I loved before
On a little street in Singapore

On a little street in Singapore
With me – beside a lotus covered door
A veil of moonlight on her lovely face
How pale the hands that held me in embrace

Fascinating huh!
